Christmas is coming. The joy of anticipation is rising, but so are coronavirus cases in many countries. Some do not want to join the Advent services in their local congregation despite hygiene measures.

As parents wait for the birth of their child the excitement builds. It is a time of intensity: the child will change their life completely. It is similar with the weeks leading up to Christmas. It is an intense time of commemorating the birth of the Son of God and of expecting His return.

Paul comes up with strong arguments in his letter to the church in Corinth. People there are finding it difficult to think around the next corner. “Look beyond the horizon of your understanding,” he would say today. And he’s right!

What role does the timing of the Our Father play in the worship service? Why are the prayers spoken without a script? Why does the organ play softly prior to the divine service? Answers to these questions can be found in the early liturgies of the Church.
