The weather is different everywhere and so is the way Christmas is celebrated. But the birth of Jesus and love of neighbour are always at the heart of the celebrations.

Songs of praise fill the streets of Nigeria, ring out in a retirement home in South Africa, and come from the mouths of children at a special service in Spain. When young people are involved in shaping things, there is always something going on in the congregation and in society. Here’s a glimpse of what the younger generation is up to.

Welcome to the new year! What? There are still a few weeks to go before the old year ends. The calendar year, that is. But the new church year began yesterday. Advent marks the start of a journey of discovery of the life and work of Jesus.

The religious holidays in December create a bit of a muddle with our usual Sunday service times. The festive season also influences the subjects of our divine services as we anticipate Christmas.

Everybody can help, and even gently used toys help. Over the recent festive season, many followed their hearts and let themselves be inspired by the spirit of giving. Money was donated, a disaster area in the Philippines received further reconstruction help, and trees were planted.

On 27 November 2022, a day after the divine service in Orhei in Moldova, the Chief Apostle conducted a service for the brothers and sisters in Chișinău. Ukrainian refugees were also part of the congregation, as some of the church premises had been converted to accommodate them.

The new church year has commenced and will be ushered in with concerts and celebrations around the world. Whether virtually or live and in person—our brothers and sisters have already begun celebrating the feast of love for their neighbour.

This Sunday we will light another candle on the Advent wreath as we turn our attention more and more to Christmas. Even so, not all feel comfortable enough yet to join the in-person services in their local congregation.

At Christmas, Christians look back and celebrate the birth of their Saviour, Jesus Christ. But they also look ahead, full of hope in the return of Jesus. But the significance of Jesus’ birth can also be experienced in the present.

On Sunday Christians around the world will celebrate the first Sunday of Advent. A time of special lights, being together, and extraordinary emotions.

It feels as though the war is closing in. Yet the people already have so little to live on. Despite their own hardship, however, the people in the Republic of Moldova are helping Ukrainian refugees in any way they can. This is the situation of the brothers and sisters whom the Chief Apostle will be visiting this weekend.

In the month of November, the old church year comes to an end and a new one begins. The divine services this month will focus on our hope in Christ’s return and try to give a small glimpse of the glory of God.

Christmas is the feast of love. Believers do not only celebrate this feast for themselves, but also want to spread the spirit of Christmas. And this they did with music and toys. Not even hygiene protocols could keep them from passing on Christmas cheer.
